The American theologian, preacher, and author Reuben Archer Torrey was active during the period that marked the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. This era was characterized by an almost boundless optimism about the future in the Western world, while at the same time major Christian revivals had a significant impact on the redefinition of large parts of the Christian landscape.
Liberalization and the dissolution of norms represented a new challenge facing Christians. The authority of the Bible was a central point that came under challenge, and its unique status and position were diminished and criticized.
Torrey was among those who were critical of this development and who opposed it. He wrote a number of books and also edited the final volumes of The Fundamentals, which were published to warn against liberalization and the relativization of the concept of sin.
Johan Oscar Smith likewise included literature by Torrey in Skjulte Skatter (Hidden Treasures), specifically in order to argue for the authority of the Bible.
