The Authors of Sanctification
Episode 1

Andrew Murray

Throughout history, there have always been men and women who have had a strong faith and a deep longing to follow Jesus. Many of them have left behind writings that have been—and continue to be—a great source of help, comfort, and edification to sincere Christians. In the series "Authors of Sanctification," we will examine a number of such authors. Who were they? What did they write? Why were they so interested in this particular issue? And what can we learn from what they wrote?

Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was originally from Scotland, but grew up and became a pastor in the Reformed Church in South Africa. The hardships the locals went through in their daily life became a key reason for his passion for mission work, and convinced him that “only God’s mighty Spirit is able to conquer the deep enmity in the unconverted heart.”

Murrays experiences of revival and God’s Spirit’s work in South Africa inspired him to write books, which became popular worldwide. He wrote extensively about sanctification, and was eager to spread this message among christians. Murray’s books became popular, especially among Christians associated with the “Keswick” movement or “Higher life movement”.

The Norwegian lay preacher and naval officer Johan Oscar Smith, who started “Hidden Treasures” in 1912, included several excerpts from Murray in his magazine. Smith and Murray shared a love for Biblical texts, such as Galatians 2, verse 20, and Philippians 3, verse 10.
