Jessie Penn-Lewis was active as a preacher and author in the early 20th century. She was British and participated, among other things, in the well-known Keswick Conventions. Penn-Lewis early became aware of the need for a deeper Christian life to follow the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
She also came into contact with Evan Roberts, who played a central role in the revival in Wales but eventually suffered a nervous breakdown and withdrew from public preaching. Together with Roberts, Penn-Lewis began publishing the magazine The Overcomer, and they also wrote the book War on the Saints, in which they warned that revivals, even if they originated from God, could develop in the wrong direction and, in the worst case, lead people astray.
Johan Oscar Smith, editor and founder of Hidden Treasures, was himself enthusiastic about Jessie Penn-Lewis’s writings and included several of her articles and texts in Hidden Treasures.
