In 1913, Jessie Penn-Lewis published the book Soul and Spirit. When Johan O. Smith read the book in 1927, he became enthusiastic about its message. He translated the book with his own comments and additions before publishing it as a serialized work in Hidden Treasures the same year.
In a private letter to Elias Aslaksen, Smith wrote:
